Thought of the week

Continuation from last week

With all that has been said up to this point on the system of management within Islam which we have based on the life of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) and his practical life example, we now look at the criteria for management.

Before we delve into the traits of a leader - which include his ethical beliefs and also level of intelligence which he must have, we first need to review the responsibilities a leader must shoulder.

Once we know what the leader's responsibilities are, we can then fill in the blanks to see what his educational background and ethical traits must be which would enable him to fulfill his role.

The Muslim scholars have determined the following ten responsibilities which a leader needs to preside over his business, non-profit charity which he directs, etc.

1. Decision making;
2. Planning and forecasting;
3. Organizing and systemization;
4. Direction and control of staff and volunteers;
5. Stimulating initiatives and enterprise amongst the workers;
6. Prevention and deterrence of problematic situations;
7. Review and study of the keys to success and failure;
8. Collection of pertinent news and information in the related fields;
9. Attracting competent people to work towards reaching marked goals and targets;
10. Encouragement and reprimanding of staff, as needed.

Each of these topics calls for a detailed study, however to ensure that that this discussion is not drawn out, we shall be brief and to the point on each one.

1. The first and most important responsibility of a leader is that of decision making. This act however, must be carried out under the shadow of knowledge and also by keeping in mind past experience. These two traits will ensure that mistakes are not repeated, just as the Prophet has said in a very famous hadith: "Surely the true believer will never be hurt by the same stone twice."

In addition, the words of Imam Ali (peace be upon him) also ring clearly on this theme that, "In the act of (making use of) knowledge of past experience there is new teachings for a person."

To be continued.
