Thought of the week
As we know, the environment in Makkah was not conducive to spreading the message of Monotheism. It is for this reason that the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) needed to migrate to another area so that he would be able to freely teach and guide those seeking this enlightenment and then to return back home. However, like all other things in his life, he could not simply go to Madinah with absolutely no preparations before hand! Certainly in this, he was also trying to teach us something about planning and preparing before taking a major step in our life!

So what exactly happened which allowed the Muslims of Makkah to leave their city to travel North towards Madinah?

In order to ensure his planning would be successful, the Prophet made use of a major event which took place every year in Makkah - the Hajj - the single largest gathering of people in one place - even in our day and age. It was here that he secretly met with a group of Muslims from Madinah and took the 'first pledge' of support from them, known in history as The First Promise of `Aqaba.

Knowing that more planning and management was still needed, he proceeded, the next year to take the 'second pledge' of support from 73 individuals - this pledge was later known as The Second Promise of `Aqabah.

After returning back to Madinah, both of these groups got together and laid down their plans and strategies to ensure that the Prophet could come to Madinah and establish his government based on the teachings of Islam. They also ensured that those with him could also come and settle in their city with little to no discomfort or difficulties.

Thus we see that a minimum of two years before the Prophet made this journey, he sat down and planned and designed a system that would ensure a smooth transfer from Makkah to Madinah.

Since our theme for this series of discussions in on the Islamic approach to Management and Administration, we should be sure to read these short articles with this topic in our minds. Many of the points covered in the life of the Prophet and the Imams are very subtle but powerful tactics which managers, leaders, CEOs and anyone in a supervisory position can use in his or her day to day life.
