Thought of the week
Continuation from last week
The next step of the Prophet of Islam (peace be upon him and his family) was to
initiate a "Non-Agression Pact" with the Muslims of Madina and the people of
other traditions who lived in and around the city. The gist of this pact was
that as long as those who did not follow the tradition of Islam did not fight or
rise up against the Muslim community of Madina, the Prophet and the believers
would no do anything to harm them.
This period of peace and harmony amongst the people of various backgrounds gave
the Muslims time to learn their faith and to build their own culture and
tradition without having to worry about wars and fighting.
Again, we know that for a company or non-profit charity, the most difficult time
is when they first start out. With fierce competition in the market, it is up to
the director of the organization or company head to ensure that their name is
known in the market and that they have time to build their reputation and
identity before going on to tackle the big shots and this is exactly what the
Prophet also employed in his life.
Obviously in addition to the pact of non-Aggression, the Prophet and the
community did as much as possible to refrain from fighting which would only
permit the enemies of Islam to group together from around the Arabian peninsula
to defeat this small group and that is why even the peace treaty of Hudaybiyya,
which was a 10 year peace pact, was ratified, much to the hatred and dismay of
some of the "closest" companions of Rasulullah.
We know that Allah had promised the Muslims that He would, "make His faith of
Al-Islam victorious over all other religions no matter that the polytheists and
disbelievers detest this", however still the Prophet needed to ensure that the
mechanisms of the world were followed (the rule of cause and effect) and thus,
sought to protect the community through peaceful means.
To be continued.
