Thought of the week
Continuation from last week
Now that the area around Madina had submitted to Islam and a good portion of the
`Arabian peninsula, with the exception of Makka, was under the banner of Islam,
the Prophet carried his message to the next level. At this step, he went outside
of his faith and even geographic area and called others to the faith of Islam.
This itself proves the false notion of "Religious Pluralism". If Islam,
Christianity and Judaism are all "equal" and "equally rewarding" as some claim,
then what need did the Prophet have to invite the various governments to the
faith of Islam? This issue of pluralism can not be tackled here, however we
request the readers to purchase the new book published by the Islamic Education
Board on this topic.
By studying history we see that the Prophet extended his hand out to the
emperors of various nations. He took it upon himself to have scribes write out
invitations to the various nations. Not only this, he specifically chose certain
people to hand deliver these letters and invitations to the respective
governments of the time. These people were chosen for specific reasons and
purposes and were not just "picked out of a hat" - rather, they fit the position
and thus, the Prophet requested them to carry out this important task.
The scholars of history have stated that the number of these letters written is
over 180 and many of them are still recorded in the books of history (such as
Makaateeb al-Rasul which is a three Volume work detailing all of the letters
written - some in their original writing!)
Again, when we reflect on this aspect of the Prophetic mission, we see that in
today's day and age too, we need to ensure that those people who are not aware
of our work and activities (whether a big business or a non-profit charity) are
acquainted and informed of what is being done. If we do not "promote ourselves"
and our "product" then no one will do this for us and thus, since no one will
know what we do, we will not be able to gain the support and backing of the
community and the society.
This is just one thing which we learn from this "simple" yet very important
aspect of the life of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family).
To be continued.
